Your Network is Your Net Worth
When I first started EquiLink, I thought the hardest part would be building the tech. Or figuring out the business model. Or surviving the never-ending to-do list. But I was wrong. The hardest part? Asking for help!! One thing you should know about me is I hate asking for help. Like deep, stomach knotting uncomfortable hate. So this whole “building a startup” thing has been a crash course in unlearning that. The truth is, you can’t do this alone, and you’re not supposed to. I was scrolling through Instagram this morning and came upon this reel by John Hu, Stanford alumni and founder of Stan Store. He said something that stuck: “Your network is your net worth. Everything they teach you at Stanford you can basically get for free online, but what you can’t replicate is who you know and who wants to do business with you.” That hit me. Because lately, I’ve realized how every meaningful step forward with EquiLink has come through a conversation, not a solo brainstorm. I’ve had marketing friends help me simplify my messaging, founder friends remind me to just take it one step at a time, and one finance genius (ex-Goldman Sachs - love you forever) who completely rewired how I see EquiLink. She made me realize this isn’t just a small equestrian business, it’s a tech startup - with huge industry shifting potential. That mental shift changed how I speak about it, how I structure funding, how I operate, and none of that would’ve happened if I hadn’t reached out, even when every part of me wanted to handle it alone. A business isn’t just a product, it’s a team, and great teams come from great networks. I’m still building both, but I’ve learned that being resourceful isn’t just about what you know. It’s about who you’re willing to ask. That conversation you don’t want to initiate? That email you’re afraid to send? That’s often the one that changes everything. Great teams don’t fall out of the sky, they come from your network. From people who believe in your vision before it’s proven. From old contacts who suddenly become collaborators. From the kind of relationships you build before you need anything. What I’m Focusing on Now Nurturing the relationships I already have Saying “yes” to more conversations, even if they feel random Asking better questions, not just trying to look smart Staying open to learning from people completely outside my industry Following up with people who inspired me, even if I don’t “have a reason” Building bridges, not just collecting contacts The version of me who asks, shares, and builds with others? She’s going to make it!! Because your network isn’t just who you know - It’s who’s willing to go to bat for you when things get real. Today’s Thought Dump You’re not building a company. You’re building a team that builds a company. Asking for help doesn’t make you weak. It makes you invested in the outcome. Your network is the multiplier - for your confidence, your clarity, your growth. You don’t need to be well-known. You need to be well-connected. Building in public is a networking tool too - you attract people who think like you when you show your process This journey gets a whole lot lighter when you let people walk it with you If you’re in the middle of building something, or thinking about starting, look around. Who’s in your corner? Who inspires you? Who would pick up the phone if you called? The answers might be worth more than your entire pitch deck ;) – Alexia
