Community Guidelines
How we keep EquiLink a safe, respectful and welcoming place for the global equestrian community.
Last updated · September 2025
EquiLink is a community built on trust, respect, and a shared love of horses. We have established these Community Guidelines and Acceptable Use Policy ("Guidelines") to outline the behavior that is expected from all users and to explain what content or activities are not allowed on the EquiLink Platform. By using EquiLink, you agree to follow these Guidelines. Violating these rules can result in content removal, warnings, suspension or termination of your account, and in severe cases, reporting to authorities.
Our goal is to maintain a safe, friendly, and inclusive environment for everyone – riders, service providers, event organizers, brands, and organizations alike. Please take a moment to review the key principles below:
1. Be Respectful and Courteous
Treat all other members of the EquiLink community with respect. This means:
- No harassment or bullying: Do not threaten, intimidate, stalk, or deliberately harass anyone. This includes sending repeated unwanted messages or trying to contact someone who has asked you to stop. Personal attacks or attempts to shame someone are not tolerated.
- No hate speech or discrimination: EquiLink has zero tolerance for content that promotes or condones hatred, violence, or discrimination against individuals or groups based on race, ethnicity, nationality, religion, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, disability, or any other characteristic. Slurs or epithets are strictly forbidden. We celebrate diversity in the equestrian community – from local riding clubs to international competitors – everyone is welcome.
- Be polite in communication: Whether you are messaging a service provider or leaving a review, keep your tone civil and constructive. It's okay to disagree or provide feedback, but do so respectfully. For example, if reviewing a service, focus on the facts of your experience rather than making personal insults.
2. No Spam or Unauthorized Advertising
EquiLink is not a platform for spamming or unrelated advertising. You should not:
- Send spam messages: Don't mass-message other users with promotional content, requests for money, chain letters, or unsolicited offers. For instance, do not message every user promoting your non-equine business or a fundraiser unrelated to EquiLink's scope.
- Post irrelevant or repetitive content: Keep listings, posts, and comments relevant to equestrian services, events, or discussions. Posting the same comment on dozens of profiles or forum threads, especially if it's promotional, is spam.
- Unauthorised ads or links: While equine businesses can list their services and products (that's the point of EquiLink!), do not post external advertisements in areas not meant for that. Use designated areas for any promotional content.
- No Multi-Level Marketing or Schemes: Do not recruit for MLMs or similar ventures on EquiLink. Users aren't here for that, and it's considered spam.
3. Prohibited Content
Certain types of content are strictly prohibited on EquiLink:
- Graphic or Violent Content: Do not post graphic images of injuries, abuse, or anything that a reasonable person would find extremely disturbing, unless it's being shared in a permitted educational context and with appropriate warning/disclaimer. We absolutely do not allow content that celebrates or encourages violence. For example, videos or photos depicting animal abuse or neglect are forbidden and will be reported to authorities. (Sharing to raise a welfare concern to authorities is one thing, but posting it publicly on our platform is not allowed.) Remember, welfare organizations are part of our user base – if you see something concerning, use the proper reporting channels.
- Sexually Explicit Material: EquiLink is not the place for pornography or sexually explicit content. Nude or sexual images of people are disallowed. Content that is overly sexually suggestive or intended for adult audiences is not appropriate here. This also includes sexual content involving animals (which is illegal and heinous) – any hint of that will be immediately reported.
- Illegal Activities: Do not use EquiLink to engage in or promote illegal acts. This covers a wide range: illicit drug use, underage drinking at events, theft, hacking, etc. For instance, you cannot list a service offering illegal performance-enhancing drugs for horses. If it's against the law, it's against our rules. Content giving instructions to commit violent or non-violent wrongdoing is banned.
- Fraudulent or Misleading Content: All information you share should be truthful to your knowledge. Do not post false information or engage in scams. Examples: creating fake event listings to collect money, impersonating another person or business, making false claims about your qualifications (e.g., saying you are a certified vet if you are not), posting reviews that are not based on real experiences (whether positive or negative). Misrepresentation erodes trust and is not allowed.
- Intellectual Property Infringement: Only share content that you have the right to share. Do not upload photos, videos, or text that you copied from someone else without permission. For example, don't take a professional photographer's competition photos and use them in your listing unless you have rights. Don't upload someone's training article from a magazine to our Knowledge Hub as if it were yours. Respect copyrights, trademarks, and other IP. If you have the right to use something (e.g., you own the photo or it's under license), that's fine. If we receive a valid IP infringement notice (like a DMCA takedown), we will remove the content and potentially penalize repeat infringers.
- Personal Data & Privacy Violations: Do not publicly post sensitive personal info of others (addresses, phone numbers, financial info, etc.) without consent. Doxxing (revealing someone's personal info to harass or incite others) is strictly forbidden. Respect people's privacy – use private messages for personal details only when necessary and with consent.
4. Animal Welfare and Safety
Given the nature of our community, we have special emphasis on treating horses and all animals humanely:
- No Tolerance for Animal Abuse: Any user found to be promoting, encouraging, or committing abuse or cruel practices towards horses (or any animal) will be banned. This includes content like videos of abusive training methods, or posts bragging about mistreating an animal. EquiLink may report such users to relevant welfare authorities. Our platform includes welfare organizations that receive routed reports – so understand that community members are encouraged to report welfare issues, and we will act on them.
- Encourage Safe Practices: We encourage sharing of safety tips and welfare guidelines. Conversely, do not encourage dangerous behavior. For example, telling someone "go ride without a helmet, it's fine" or giving advice that is clearly unsafe is not acceptable. If we spot content where someone might get hurt (especially minors) due to bad advice, we may remove it or add a caution.
- If You See Something, Say Something: Use our report feature if you encounter content or behavior that puts someone (human or animal) at risk. We have dedicated channels to route serious concerns to the right people, and human moderators will review reports.
5. Platform Integrity
We also require that you use EquiLink in a manner that preserves the integrity and security of the platform:
- No Hacking or Exploiting: Do not attempt to hack, scrape, or otherwise tamper with EquiLink's systems. This means no trying to bypass security measures, inject malicious code, reverse engineer our app, or use automated bots to collect data. Such actions are not only violations of these Guidelines but potentially criminal offenses. We monitor for suspicious technical activity.
- No Impersonation: Do not pretend to be another user, a celebrity, EquiLink staff, or anyone else you're not. Your profile should reflect your own identity or your business's identity. Parody is generally not applicable here, but in any case, impersonation with intent to deceive is prohibited.
- One Account per User: Generally, we expect each person to maintain a single account (except distinct personal vs. business profiles if our system allows it). Do not create multiple accounts to evade bans or manipulate our systems. If you're suspended, do not make a new account without permission.
- No Circumvention of Fees or Rules: As a marketplace, our providers agree to handle transactions through EquiLink. Users (both riders and providers) should not try to systematically circumvent the platform for bookings that originated here. For instance, providers should not tell riders "cancel on EquiLink and pay me cash to avoid fees" – that undermines the platform's sustainability and may lead to account removal. Likewise, riders shouldn't push providers to take payment off-platform for a discount. We can't enforce every private conversation, but if discovered, this behavior violates our Terms. Keep it fair and use the platform as intended.
6. Community Content Guidelines (Knowledge Hub, Reviews, etc.)
EquiLink might have areas like forums, knowledge articles, Q&A, or review sections. In those, in addition to above rules:
- Stay On-Topic: Ensure your contributions are relevant to equestrian life or the specific discussion. Off-topic posts may be removed to keep discussions useful.
- Quality and Helpfulness: We encourage sharing of knowledge – be truthful and helpful. If you're writing an article or answering a question, do so to the best of your knowledge and don't plagiarize. If you cite statistics or medical info, accuracy is important. Misinformation that can cause harm (like spreading false health remedies for horses) will be moderated.
- No Self-Promotion in Disguise: It's fine to mention your business in context (e.g., "In my experience as a trainer, I find X technique works, and I offer clinics on this if interested."). But don't make every post an advertisement for yourself. Purely self-promotional or salesy posts in the community sections will be removed.
- Respect Others' Contributions: Do not edit or manipulate others' content in a malicious way. When disagreeing, focus on the idea, not the person. Constructive criticism is fine; ad hominem attacks are not.
7. Reporting Problems and Moderation Process
EquiLink provides features to report content or users that violate these Guidelines. Here's how we handle it:
- Reporting: If you encounter harassment, inappropriate content, scams, or any violation, you can report it directly through the app (each listing or profile may have a "Report" option) or email us at support@equilink.com. We route reports to our Trust & Safety team for review. We may also utilize automated flags for things like hate speech or explicit images, but human moderation is involved in decisions.
- Investigation: Our team will review the report. This may include reading message exchanges, checking the content, and looking at context. We strive to do this promptly (we know timely removal can prevent harm), but response times can vary based on severity and volume. Content that is clearly illegal or extremely harmful will be addressed ASAP.
- Enforcement Actions: If we determine a violation occurred, we take appropriate action. This can range from a warning or required content removal (we might ask you to edit a post) up to account suspension or permanent ban. We try to match the severity: e.g., a first-time minor offense might get a warning; a serious violation (like posting hate speech or fraud) can result in immediate suspension or ban without warning.
- Notification: In many cases, we will notify the user of the action taken against them and why (via email or app notification). However, we may not disclose details of reports or reporters to the offending user for privacy and safety reasons. For example, "Your post was removed due to a violation of our hate speech policy" – we won't necessarily say who reported it.
- Appeals: If you believe we made a mistake in our moderation decision, you can contact us to appeal. We will give you an opportunity to explain or provide context. We'll re-review and make a good faith effort to be fair. However, repeated or egregious violations likely won't be reversed. Our decisions aim to balance individual cases with the overall health of the community.
- Community Involvement: We appreciate our community helping enforce these standards. Regular contributors who consistently follow the rules make EquiLink better for everyone. We may even have ambassador or moderator programs in the future to empower trusted users (if so, they will be bound by additional guidelines and oversight).
8. Additional Notes for Specific User Groups
- Service Providers/Business Users: In addition to these guidelines, remember you also have to adhere to our Business Agreement. This includes maintaining professionalism. Do not publish misleading ads, and do not badmouth clients publicly (if there's an issue, handle it through proper channels; retaliatory reviews or shaming clients violate the respect rule).
- Brands and Advertisers: If you're a brand running promotions, ensure your content complies with all these rules and is not overly intrusive. Any official advertising we allow on the platform must also meet our standards (no false claims in ads, no offensive imagery, etc.).
- Minors: While our platform is generally for adults (18+ for business users, and at least 13 for general use), if minors use the platform (with guardian oversight), they should also follow these guidelines. We particularly emphasize online safety for younger users: do not share personal information publicly, and immediately report any inappropriate contact from others. We have a duty to protect minors on the platform and will take swift action against anyone targeting or endangering them.
9. Concluding Statement
These Community Guidelines are here to ensure that EquiLink remains a positive space for all equestrian enthusiasts. We ask every member to take them to heart. Your behavior on EquiLink should reflect the same courtesy and care you'd show at a real barn or equestrian event. The golden rule applies: treat others how you want to be treated.
Violations of these Guidelines not only harm others but can jeopardize your ability to use EquiLink. Let's avoid that – if you're ever unsure whether something is acceptable, err on the side of caution or ask us. We'd much rather help clarify beforehand than have to step in afterwards.
Thank you for being a part of EquiLink and for doing your part to uphold these standards.
Together, let's build a supportive community that uplifts each other and our horses.
(If you need to report a violation or have any questions about these Guidelines, please contact support or email support@equilink.com.)
